Laptop Keyboard Test
To test a laptop keyboard, press every key and watch it light up on the compact layout below. The Fn key itself is usually invisible to browsers. Home, End, Page Up and Page Down are often Fn plus an arrow key on laptops, and they appear under keys that are not on the picture when you press them.
Keyboard test
You need a physical keyboard for this test. On a phone or tablet, connect a keyboard by Bluetooth or USB first. The on-screen keyboard of a phone does not report which physical key you pressed.
Click here first, so the page receives your key presses.
The page lost focus, perhaps because of Alt+Tab, the Windows key or a shortcut. Click anywhere on the page and continue.

How it works
Press keys on your keyboard. Each key lights up on the picture while you hold it and stays teal once it has worked. The page reads the key events your browser already gives every web page and never sends them anywhere.
This test needs JavaScript. The explanations below work without it.
How to do it
- Unplug any external keyboard so only the laptop keyboard is used.
- Click once on the page and press every key.
- Hold Fn and press the arrow keys and top row to test the second functions.
- Look for keys that never light up, red keys and orange keys.
Laptop keys that behave differently
- Fn and Fn Lock: the Fn key changes what other keys send. Many laptops have an Fn Lock (often Fn+Esc) that swaps the top row between F1 to F12 and media keys. If F5 changes the volume, try Fn+F5.
- Num Lock on small laptops: some older laptops have a hidden number pad on the letter keys. If letters type numbers, Num Lock is on.
- Navigation keys: Home, End, Page Up and Page Down are often Fn plus an arrow key. They show up under keys that are not on this picture.
- Print Screen: on Windows the browser only receives the release of this key. The test counts that as working.
If several keys next to each other fail
On a laptop, a group of neighbouring keys that stop together often points to the keyboard connector or liquid damage rather than single switches. Restart first. If the keys also fail in the BIOS or startup screen, it is hardware. The keyboard not working guide goes through the steps.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my laptop F5 key change volume?
Many laptops send media functions on the top row by default. Hold Fn and press F5, or switch Fn Lock, often with Fn+Esc or a setting in the BIOS or the maker’s app, to make F1 to F12 the default.
Why are letters typing numbers on my laptop?
Some laptops without a separate number pad put one on the letter keys, active when Num Lock is on. Press Num Lock, often Fn plus a key on the top row, to turn it off.
Can I test the Fn key on a laptop?
Not directly. Fn is handled inside the laptop keyboard and is not reported to the browser. Hold Fn and press an arrow key: if Home or End appears in the test, Fn works.
Can I use an external keyboard to test?
Yes, but then you test the external keyboard. To check the built-in one, unplug other keyboards first so you know which one sends the key presses.
